Sixty-nine years ago today, Tab Hunter was topping the Billboard charts with his classic hit "Young Love."

Released in 1957 via Dot Records, "Young Love" was a cover of the 1956 track by Ric Cartey. Recorded as a 7" 45 RPM single, the track became hugely successful, persevering as the most popular version of the song ever produced. Shortly after its release, it entered the Billboard Best Sellers chart and climbed to the No. 1 spot, holding it for six consecutive weeks. "Young Love" also dominated the U.K. charts at the time, holding the No. 1 spot for seven weeks straight.

Following the track's release, it achieved great commercial success and critical acclaim, selling over one million copies and being ranked the No. 4 best-selling song of 1957. The success of "Young Love" pushed Dot Records into further notoriety and inspired Warner Bros.—who had an acting contract with Hunter—to launch its own record label.

Produced by Randy Wood, the track is recognizable for its orchestral instrumentation and polished pop-rock feel. Although an amateur singer, Hunter delivered a smooth, heartfelt vocal performance. "Young Love" amplified the public's view of Hunter as the "boy-next-door" of Hollywood, with the song's success largely driven by the star's already prominent status as a Hollywood heartthrob.

Despite his No. 1 hit on the Billboard charts, Hunter didn't start off as a musician. Although his portfolio spans many different creative industries, he is mainly recognized as an actor. Known for his roles in the classic '50s films, Battle Cry, Damn Yankees and Island of Desire, Hunter starred in over 40 films throughout his career, building a legacy as a Hollywood legend.

Hunter's blonde hair and sharp good looks thrusted him into Hollywood heartthrob status. Years later, in his 2005 memoir Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, the star opened up about his sexuality, reflecting on his experience as a gay man navigating the entertainment landscape in the '50s. His life story made a heavy cultural impact in the 2000s, reigniting conversations surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and destigmatizing the overlap between Hollywood and sexuality.

Years after his death in 2018, Hunter is still praised and remembered for his contributions to the entertainment industry. His legacy as an influential actor and activist lives on today.
