Despite the palpable chemistry between Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe on Outlander, their romance only exists on-screen (much to their fans’ dismay). Off camera, the two share a close friendship but keep their personal love lives largely private. Balfe is married to music producer Tony McGill, while Heughan remains notably discreet about his relationships and dating life.
Heughan, who Outlander fans have fallen in love with as the show’s heartthrob Jamie Fraser, has kept his romantic relationships largely out of the spotlight since his rise to fame. During a 2022 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Heughan discussed how his acting career has gotten in the way of dating.
“The job is so all-encompassing, and we spend so much time on set and at work,” he said. “But I’m open to something. I’m not sure what I’m saying I’m open for, but I’m open.”
He echoed the sentiments in an earlier interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, saying, “Certainly, relationships are hard when you’re working in Scotland 10 months a year. I travel a lot, and any downtime I have, I’m trying to do other projects, so very much, my career comes first. Maybe I will find someone eventually.”
Although he appears to be single now, Heughan has been publicly linked to several women over the years. Ahead, a look back at the actor’s ultra-private dating history (or at least what we know of it).

In a 2017 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Heughan’s relationship status with girlfriend MacKenzie Mauzy was confirmed. Though he didn’t reveal much about Mauzy, he did say they met at an industry event and that she had to deal with some trolling from his fans.

“Initially, it is upsetting, but ultimately, it doesn’t mean anything. It feels like a schoolyard thing,” Heughan said of his fans’ criticism to him dating Mauzy.
The couple made their first public appearance at an Oscars party in February 2017, and also attended a Refinery29 event during New York Fashion Week in September 2017. But eagle-eyed fans first spotted Heughan in a 2015 Instagram post of Mauzy’s—so they may have started dating well before their first public appearance as a couple. They weren’t spotted together after 2017, so it’s thought that they broke up sometime at the end of that year or early in 2018.

Heughan was linked to Twin Peaks actress Amy Shiels in 2018. Speculation about their dating status began picking up in April 2018, when Shiels posted a picture of the two of them on Instagram for the actor’s birthday. In her caption, however, she referred to him as “big brother,” throwing fans off.
Shiels later attended the premiere of Heughan’s movie The Spy Who Dumped Me in July 2018—though she posed solo on the red carpet, and the two weren’t photographed together.
A few days after the event, sources confirmed that Heughan and Shiels were dating, but neither actor confirmed the relationship, and eventually, they split.

In March 2022, Heughan was spotted kissing Australian model Monika Clarke at Café Select in New York City. The two were also photographed holding hands as they strolled through SoHo. That same week, the actor was asked about the photos and dating rumors at the season six premiere of Outlander, but cheekily dodged the questions.
They weren’t spotted together again after that spring, so it’s unknown how long they dated.
