Fiona Lowe, the 13-year-old daughter of actor Chad Lowe and producer Kim Painter, died on Tuesday, September 29, and the cause of death has now been revealed.
According to People, a statement from the medical examiner confirmed that Fiona was pronounced dead at a local hospital at 1:14 am on September 29. The manner of death was ruled a suicide.
The family previously alluded to Fiona’s mental health struggles in a statement announcing her tragic passing. “If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988,” the family shared.
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” the family also said in the statement. “She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time.”
Chad, the brother of actor Rob Lowe, and Kim welcomed Fiona on November 16, 2012. She was the couple’s second child, after their eldest daughter, Mabel, was born in May 2009 and their youngest, Nixie, in March 2016.
Following the news of Fiona’s passing, a 2024 interview Rob gave on the Still Here Hollywood podcast resurfaced. In the interview, the Life Goes On alum spoke about how proud he is to be a “girl dad” and how it’s changed his perspective on the world.

“I’m a girl dad,” he said, per The Daily Mail. “It’s so interesting because [I’m] always wanting to have my own experiences and not live in the shadow or follow in the footsteps of somebody. I get the experience of being a girl dad. I feel like having daughters is such an incredible privilege.”

He added, “I know that there are struggles. And now it’s taken what I’ve known intellectually, and it’s put it in my heart because I now have three daughters. And so, I look at the world from, really, their perspective, and I see the world and a lot of the injustices in the world from their perspective.”
“It’s not all doom and gloom,” Rob continued. “Society is changing. I see how we’re really becoming conscious of the role of women. We may, who knows, have the first female president. [We’re] really empowering women and seeing how much women have to offer. I personally think that if women were in charge of nations, we’d be a lot more peaceful.”
