Sandwiched between two very high-octane shows on the Milan Fashion Week calendar—Gucci the day before and Dolce & Gabbana immediately following—Maximilian Davis’s fall collection for Ferragamo felt like a palette cleanser. He staged his show this season inside the Triennale art and design museum, in a long runway snaking through one of the galleries with deep navy carpeting on the floor and matching velvet curtains hanging along the walls. It was dark in that cavernous, winding space, but also warm and serene.
Davis wanted to transport us to an intimate speakeasy, or at least the free-spirited, communal aspects of one. His was less about raucous partying and more about convening in a room full of soft jazz and impeccably-dressed revelers to celebrate with ease and style. As the models began to walk out onto that long, hot runway, there was an immediate feeling of a return to elegance, a measured and exacting interpretation of modern ladies. Davis’s new collection was one of his best yet at Ferragamo, a house that he has reinvigorated with his sophisticated but cool and contemporary design point of view.
The women frequenting this fantasy speakeasy wore luxuriously tailored peacoats in asymmetrical cuts that were just oversized enough. A white silk top and matching skirt were divine with their sideways lacing up the front, the top hanging just so off the model’s shoulder. Davis designed cool little sailor jackets with button detailing running up and down and across in all different directions. Some of the most beautiful pieces came towards the end of the collection: silky and lamé slips and strapless dresses with Art Deco-inspired silhouettes in a sumptuous palette of gold and brown. A pleated mermaid-shaped gown in a bronzey gold and black looked incredible paired with a mossy green cashmere cocoon coat.

At this moment, fashion designers, particularly those working at heritage luxury houses, are fascinated by dressing real women for everyday life. There is a collective pull towards the bourgeoisie, towards effortlessness and the idea of the wardrobe. Whereas many of these conversations can come off as trite or detached from reality, Davis actually knows how a certain clientele of well-heeled women want to dress—and how they want to feel in their clothes. He has always been a perfect fit for Ferragamo because of this, and he has successfully modernized one of Italy’s most storied brands.
Davis believes in old-world glamour and elegance, but he translates them through a lens of energy and spirit. There is so much soul in his Ferragamo, alongside some pretty spectacular beauty.
