HBO Max has announced a Gilmore Girls documentary, featuring star Lauren Graham and creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Described as “a rare insider view,” the film will include behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, and exclusive peeks at the scripts.
An unauthorized documentary, originally titled Searching for Stars Hollow, was previously announced in August 2025.
Two decades since Gilmore Girls went off the air, the spotlight is back on Stars Hollow.
HBO Max has announced that an untitled documentary about the seminal mother-daughter series starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel is currently in production. Described as “a rare insider view,” the doc will be told straight from the show’s creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino; her husband, executive producer and writer Daniel Palladino; Graham; and additional key cast and crew members.
Fans can expect a firsthand account of how Gilmore Girls “eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon,” as well as behind-the-scenes footage, outtakes, and exclusive peeks at the scripts.

The film, notes HBO Max, is the “first-ever authorized documentary about the series.”
Last August, Ink on Paper Studios announced its own independent Gilmore Girls retrospective, Searching for Stars Hollow — which has since been retitled Drink Coffee, Talk Fast — featuring interviews with Chad Michael Murray (Tristin Dugray), Jared Padalecki (Dean Forrester), Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore), Keiko Agena (Lane Kim), and two dozen more memorable faces from the show’s seven-season run.
According to the doc’s Kickstarter, it was set to debut “by the summer of 2026.” Ink on Paper Studios did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for an update on the project.

Graham and Sherman-Palladino have also collaborated on a Gilmore Girls book, which promises to take readers behind the scenes of the popular show “through a blend of sharp wit, personal reflection, and never-before-shared stories.” As-yet untitled just like the HBO Max documentary, the book is set for publication in the fall of 2027.

Gilmore Girls, which follows the lives and loves of single mother Lorelai (Graham) and her precocious daughter Rory (Bledel), was one of the WB’s most popular series during its seven-season run from 2000 to 2007.
A decade later, the key cast — Graham, Bledel, Padalecki, Bishop, Agena, Melissa McCarthy (Sookie), Scott Patterson (Luke, Lorelai’s longtime boyfriend) and Milo Ventimiglia (Jess, Rory’s ex-boyfriend) — all returned to Stars Hollow for Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Netflix. The miniseries picked up 10 years after the show’s finale and played out over four episodes, one for each of the seasons, concluding with Rory’s revelation that she’s pregnant.

The sequel’s ending was polarizing for fans of the original series, although Graham has admitted she didn’t “exactly understand why.”
Making the revival was “the time of my life,” she told Variety ahead of her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in October. “I was on clouds every single day at work, and I felt like the work was really good and the episodes were really beautiful.”
