When it comes to sourcing the costumes for her music videos, Taylor Swift and stylist Joseph Cassell have followed a pretty similar pattern over the years.
For her most recent three albums, in particular, the duo have turned their attention to the big names: Roberto Cavalli, Versace, and Gucci, to name a few. In The Life of a Showgirl’s “The Fate of Ophelia,” The Tortured Poets Department’s “Fortnight,” and Midnights’s “Bejeweled” before it, the costuming was theatrical and decadent, often echoing Swift’s on-stage Eras Tour wardrobe. But for her newest offering, “Opalite,” the artist-slash-director took things back to basics.
If you haven’t yet watched the video, here’s the TLDR: thanks to an old-school infomercial, a lonely brown-haired Swift (with only a pet rock for a friend) and an equally-as-adorkable Domhnall Gleeson (with a cactus as his companion) found one another, matching each other’s energy and helping their new friend feel seen.
Simply sweet, wonderfully kitschy, and highly introspective, the story called for style moments just as charming, off-kilter, and nostalgic—so it was no surprise that the woman behind it all would swap her feather headdresses, custom gowns, and bedazzled bodysuits for the denim vests and polos of her own ’90s childhood. The worn-in vintage pieces felt particularly at home in the retro Swift-ified shopping mall the BFFs explored on screen (with stores named after the singer’s lyrics, of course), and helped tell a heartwarming story of finding the person who just gets you—awkward dancing and all.
Ahead, see all the best looks from the music video.
Ralph Lauren
In her living room, the artist attempts to play a game with her pet rock, wearing a color-blocked polo from Ralph Lauren’s archives. The early ’90s style was designed with wide stripes of teal, yellow, purple, and red, and was worn backwards by Swift—a style trick she’s tried out before.

Vintage
For the swing set scene, Swift wore an ’80s suede-and-sherpa menswear jacket with an Aztec pattern. She paired the teal piece with browns: a cozy hat, trousers, and boots.

Free People
One of the only contemporary pieces in the video, these “Sweet Pea” overalls (now sold out, naturally), were designed as part of Free People’s heritage-inspired “We The Free” line. Adorned with needlepoint embroidery and worn in Swift’s pink bedroom, they felt super nostalgic.

Vintage
For the karaoke scene, Swift went full ’90s, wearing her little red dress with butterfly clips and platform sandal heels (courtesy of Wild Fable). She also accessorized her rock pal with a friendship bracelet for a sweet nod to the Eras Tour tradition.

Reebok
Paired with her ’80s jazzercise tracksuit (sweatbands and all), these Reebok sneakers were designed to reflect decades-past tennis shoes. Available for $85, the Club C 85 Vintage Sneakers offer a sleek and minimalist look with subtle pops of color for that extra flair.

Guess
Swift wore this ’80s two-tone denim vest from Guess over a striped long sleeve for the playful photo booth scene, where Lewis Capaldi joined in on the fun. She paired the piece with high-waisted light-wash jeans, a statement belt, and brown Brioso boots.

Basic Editions
Another vintage find, this Basic Editions “Hang in There Baby” sweatshirt came straight from the ’90s, designed in a pale butter yellow and printed with a drawing of a cat—because it wouldn’t be a Taylor Swift music video without at least one reference to her favorite animal. She accessorized with a flower claw clip, butterfly earrings, and a fanny pack.

Custom
The final looks of the video—sparkly teal tracksuits with orange stripes—appear to have been made custom for Swift and Gleeson. They’re the perfect match to several of the Showgirl’s merch available online, including a pearlescent barrette.
