LIV Golf provides update on injured star and names replacement for Trump event

Ripper GC has confirmed Elvis Smylie will miss LIV Golf New York at Trump National Bedminster with a rib injury, with Travis Smyth called up again to replace him.

Australian Smylie, 24, is one of the most talented youngsters in the game, winning on his LIV Golf debut in February, but he has been dogged by injury in recent weeks. He was forced to withdraw ahead of The Open Championship, and he missed LIV Golf United Kingdom last month.

The team says Smylie will return to action "soon," but it remains to be seen whether he will feature before the end of the season. The campaign is due to conclude with the Team Championship in Michigan from Aug. 27-30, but the $40 million finale is in significant doubt amid the league's cash crisis.

"Elvis Smylie continues to make good progress in his recovery from a rib injury, but won’t be ready to return for LIV Golf New York this week," Ripper posted in a social media update.

"Fellow Australian Travis Smyth will once again step in for Ripper GC. We’re looking forward to having Elvis back soon, and we’re excited to welcome Travis back to the team."

Smylie gave a signal of his intent by winning on debut in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the lefty is 10th in the standings with two individual events remaining.

Asian Tour pro Smyth, 31, has played four LIV events this season, peaking with a T8 finish in South Korea, but he has failed to finish in the top 40 in his other starts.

The Aussie played LIV's first three events in its debut season, and he has his heart set on finally becoming a full-time member next season, if the league survives.

He said: "It's an incredible league.

"Ever since I got to play those first three events, it's the tour I've wanted to play on, obviously, playing Asian Tour, International Series, they kind of have been my majors that I've focused on and really wanted to get back. It's so much fun out here.

"It's still an incredible league. I really hope it survives. It's a ton of fun out here, especially alongside these guys."

Smylie is not the only LIV member on the injured list, with Louis Oosthuizen missing out again this week. Like Smylie, he missed The Open and LIV Golf UK.

The Southern Guards captain is nursing a back injury, and he has been replaced for the second event running by fellow South African Martin Vorster.
