Prince Louis, the youngest child of Prince William and Kate Middleton, turns 8 today. To celebrate their son’s birthday, the Prince and Princess of Wales shared a new picture and videos of him to their social media accounts.

The photo and footage were taken by Matt Porteous during a Wales family holiday to Cornwall earlier this month. In the video, Prince Louis plays on the beach, jumps into the sea, and holds up a cricket bat.

Historically, the family has debuted a new photo of the children ahead of their birthdays, sharing the image early with press under embargo, so as to publish in newspapers on the day of the birthday. However, starting with Prince Louis’s sixth birthday in 2024, the Waleses released a photograph directly on their own social media. As T&C’s Victoria Murphy noted at the time, the change in strategy came following an edited image released by Kensington Palace for Mother’s Day, and in the wake of Kate sharing her cancer diagnosis. The straight-to-social-media strategy has continued in the two years since.

Prince Louis, who is currently 4th in the British line of succession, attends Lambrook School in Berkshire. He started there in fall 2022, shortly after his family moved to Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor Castle estate. This past fall, the Waleses moved into Forest Lodge, which was described as their “forever home.”

"Windsor has become their home. However, over the last few years while they have lived at Adelaide Cottage there have been some really difficult times,” a royal source told the BBC. “Moving gives them an opportunity for a fresh start and a new chapter. It’s an opportunity to leave some of the more unhappy memories behind.” The BBC reported that the family plans to continue to live there when the Prince and Princess of Wales become King and Queen.
