“Princess Diaries 3 ”Is 'Coming' Along, Reveals Garry Marshall’s Daughter Kathleen in an Update on the Film (Exclusive)

Kathleen Marshall confirms development on Princess Diaries 3 is ongoing with a strong team in place

Anne Hathaway also said earlier this week that the project is still in the works

Kathleen's mother, Barbara Marshall, also praised Hathaway as a “team player” with a “beautiful heart”

Anne Hathaway can still book that next trip to Genovia with confidence.

Kathleen Marshall, the daughter of the late Princess Diaries director Garry Marshall, exclusively tells PEOPLE at the opening night of Beaches on Broadway that The Princess Diaries 3 is still in the works.

“We're working on Princess Diaries 3,” Kathleen says on Wednesday, April 22, adding that she’s “excited to be a part of anything” upcoming related to Princess Diaries.

“It’s working out,” Kathleen adds of the upcoming project, noting that they hope it’s “the next thing” for Hathaway. She tells PEOPLE that she and Princess Diaries producer Debra Martin Chase exchange emails “every once in a while.”

“We’re moving it along,” Kathleen says. “I mean, there's just an incredible team in place. So it's coming. It's coming.”

Kathleen walked the red carpet outside the Majestic Theater with her mother, Barbara Marshall, to celebrate the new stage musical adaptation of Garry’s hit 1988 movie Beaches. Garry, who died in July 2016 at 81, also directed The Princess Diaries in 2001 and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, both starring Hathaway and Julie Andrews.

Speaking of the Devil Wears Prada 2 actress, Kathleen and Barbara had nothing but beautiful things to say about PEOPLE’s World’s Most Beautiful cover star.

“We've known her all these years,” Barbara tells PEOPLE. “She's wonderful. We can talk to her. I mean, she has started with us, with Garry, and we're thrilled where she is right now. We can't wait to see the new movie.”

Kathleen also calls Hathaway, 43, a “team player” with a “beautiful heart.”

Development on a third Princess Diaries movie has continued in recent years, even after Garry’s death. In 2019, Hathaway said a script had been completed and both she and Andrews, 90, were prepared to film. In 2022, there were reports that Disney was developing the movie, and filmmaker Adele Lim was hired to direct in October 2024.

While promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2 this month, Hathaway told Entertainment Weekly that Princess Diaries 3 is still in the works.

“100%, we’re constantly working on it,” Hathaway said, adding that Devil Wears Prada 2 came together “unexpectedly,” and it would have been difficult to make both movies at the same time.

"If I learned anything from [Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park," Hathaway told the outlet.

Hathaway can be seen in Mother Mary on Friday, April 24, and in The Devil Wears Prada 2 on May 1. She also has roles in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which opens in July; The End of Oak Street, which hits theaters in August; and Verity, which opens in October.
