A salad dressing recall has received the FDA’s highest warning level.
After Salata Dressings, LLC, a Texas company, voluntarily recalled its Salata Salad Kitchen Jalapeño Avocado Dressing on Aug. 6 for potential Salmonella contamination, the recall received a Class I categorization on Tuesday, Sept. 29, per a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforcement report.
A Class I recall means that a “reasonable probability” exists that using or being exposed to affected items “will cause serious adverse health consequences or death,” per FDA guidance.
The affected items in the recall were Salata Salad Kitchen Jalapeño Avocado Dressing items in 12.5 fluid oz. bottles with UPC 8 50043-70646 5 and one-gallon jugs with four jugs per shipping case, per the report.
Recalled products have various expiration dates ranging from July 8, 2026 to Nov. 25, 2026 and were distributed in Georgia, North Carolina and Texas, according to the report.
The recall affects 1,724 cases of the dressing.

The items were recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination in the firm’s supplier’s diced jalapeño.
According to the company’s Aug. 11 recall announcement shared by the FDA, the diced jalapeño was received across four lots and produced into the dressing between July 8 and July 29.
Salata Dressings said it initiated its recall after its suppliers notified the company that the ingredient “may have been contaminated with Salmonella and possibly associated with a multistate outbreak” the FDA was investigating.
The agency continued to investigate a Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors as of Aug. 20, per an FDA announcement.

Coast Citrus Distributors initiated a recall on July 22 and expanded it to remaining jalapeños imported from Sinaloa, Mexico and linked to the outbreak on Aug. 5.
Downstream firms recalling items affected by Coast Citrus’ recall included Salata Dressings, along with Whole Foods Market and Taylor Fresh Foods.
The outbreak includes 431 illnesses and 57 hospitalizations, with the last illness onset date being on Aug. 2, according to the FDA’s outbreak investigation page.
Thirty-two states have cases in the outbreak, per the FDA.
“Upon receiving this notice, we immediately identified all affected finished product, ceased further distribution, quarantined the product, destroyed the product and notified HEB immediately,” Salata Dressings said of the alert from Coast Citrus Distributors.
The announcement said the company recalled its Jalapeño Avocado Dressing in 12 oz. bottles with best-by dates of Nov. 5, 13, 18 and 25 that were distributed in Texas HEB stores between July 13 and Aug. 5.
As of the time of the announcement, no illnesses had been reported related to recalled items.
The company urged consumers to return affected items purchased from HEB for a refund.
Salata Dressings did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Per Salata Dressings’ company announcement, Salmonella causes symptoms like fever, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, with rare cases of the organism getting into the bloodstream and causing severe illness. Infections can be particularly serious for young children, elderly individuals and other people with weakened immune systems, the announcement notes.
