Yes, that was Andy Samberg as a Neil Diamond impersonator in that bizarre mayonnaise commercial during the Super Bowl. What the hell, man?
The ad for Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise sees the *Saturday Night Live* alum portray a sandwich lover named "Meal Diamond" who sings the praises of the company's signature condiment in a parody of "Sweet Caroline."
The extended version of the ad opens with a couple in a restaurant having an inane conversation about workplace drama. Samberg abruptly cuts them off by singing about his life story.

"I was born in this deli. My best friend was that bologna," he says, in reference to a large hunk of deli meat sitting next to him at a table. "That is: until I met you," he adds while looking at a bottle of Hellmann's.
Samberg then sings an amended version of the song's prechorus as he gets up close and personal with several customers' sandwiches. "Ham… touching ham…touching cheese…touching you!"
He then leads the restaurant in a rousing rendition of the chorus, singing, "Sweet sandwich time/Hellmann's makes it taste so good" as other patrons shout "Bum bum bum" and "So good! So good! So good!"

Samberg continues, "I squirt you while I'm walking by" as he squeezes dollops of mayonnaise onto a row of sandwiches. As an aside, he adds, "I live in the walls!"

The comedian then breaks the rhyme scheme of the chorus when he changes the subject to focus on the character's inner pain, singing "Sometimes I wonder who my parents are!" (The crowd doesn't acknowledge the darkness of that last line, however, as they simply repeat "So good" several more times.)**

He then adds, "I've never been outside," suggesting that the diner is an inescapable prison, before turning his attention back to mayonnaise. "It makes your sandwich taste so good."
After the song is over, Meal Diamond approaches a diner patron (played by Elle Fanning) with a surprising proposal.
"If you marry me, the curse is broken and I can leave!" he exclaims.
Fanning's character responds, "No, thank you."

Elle Fanning and Andy Samberg in a Hellmann's commercial.
In the most *Hot Rod*–y moment of the ad, Samberg completely misses Fanning's rejection, and instead celebrates a false victory. "Yes!" he yells as the ad abruptly ends.
The ad comes off the heels of — but is seemingly not actually connected to — *Song Sung Blue*, the music drama about the tumultuous lives of Neil Diamond tribute musicians Mike (Hugh Jackman) and Claire Sardina (Kate Hudson), also known as Lightning and Thunder. Hudson received an Oscar nomination for her turn as the latter musician.
