It's not *quite* as scary as having a heart attack while flying a small airplane (season 4) or escaping the brutal flames of a wildfire (season 5), but the just-released first look at *Virgin River *season 7 sees Jack (Martin Henderson) and Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) navigating a somber threat of a different kind.

After season 6 of the beloved Netflix series ended with big news regarding the melodrama's central couple potentially adopting a baby from one of Nurse Mel's patients, Marley (Rachel Drance), the series' new trailer introduces a concerning roadblock along the pair's path to parenthood.

"This is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another," Mel tells Jack at the top of the clip, just before Marley is shown in tears, pleading with the couple as she tells them, "I'm gonna need a little time."**

Later, a frustrated Jack asks Mel, "What are we supposed to do? Are we just supposed to sit here and wait?" to which Mel responds, "Well, what else can we do? It's not our baby. Not yet."

The camera then shows them embracing inside what's presumed to be a new home together, on the verge of their next steps.

Eventually, the trailer shows Mel having an emotional conversation with Marley, telling the young woman that she "wasn't ready for how painful it would be to feel hope again," after her hardships with pregnancy and the loss of her first husband, Mark.

Outside of Jack and Mel's baby drama, the new preview doesn't offer any insight into the season 6 cliffhanger, after Jack gasped at a potentially horrific scene upon traveling to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley), to check on her and their twins after she failed to show up to do Mel's makeup at the wedding.

"I do know [what makes him gasp]," Breckenridge told* * of the last shot of Jack in the season 6 finale. "But I can't tell you. It's too big of a thing. I couldn't possibly."

The new teaser does, however, promise intensifying complications in Preacher's (Colin Lawrence) love life, as well as flames that continue to burn between Brie (Zibby Allen) and Brady (Ben Hollingsworth).

Season 7 also sees *The Vampire Diaries*' Sara Canning join the cast as Victoria, a woman who travels to the town of Virgin River to investigate Doc’s (Tim Matheson) medical dealings, following suspicions of malpractice that bubbled up last season.

In typical *Virgin River* fashion, though, even the season 7 trailer ends on a cliffhanger.

"Wherever my finger lands, that's where we're going to go on our honeymoon," Mel tells Jack as they sit in bed together, spinning a globe for ideas.

Just before Mel's finger touches down on the device, however, the preview cuts to black, leaving their next adventure a mystery.

"The storyline with Marley and the baby does not disappear in season 7," Breckenridge added last year in her conversation with EW. "It's pretty heavily featured. I can't tell you what happens with it, but I can tell you that it doesn't disappear. It's still there, and it's something that me and Jack have to navigate through. It brings stuff up, of course."**

*Riverdale* actor Cody Kearsley also joins the season 7 cast as new character Clay, described on Netflix's press site as "the kind of guy who gets noticed when he enters a room," and who "has experience working the rodeo circuit, and he grew up in foster care with his younger sister, whom he hasn’t seen since he was a teenager."

Another intriguing new addition is Austin Nichols (*One Tree Hill*) as a mysterious figure from Mel's past whose presence stands to upend the small town dynamic.

*Virgin River* season 7 premieres March 12 on Netflix. Watch the first trailer for the new season above.**
