The longtime friends grew up in Los Angeles and had wanted to work together for years
The film, which is now out on Netflix, explores love after loss and sisterhood
Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson may have known each other for years, but their relationship was put to the test when they played romantic leads in Netflix's Voicemails for Isabelle.
Luckily, slipping into character wasn't difficult. Deutch, 31, and Robinson, 31, both grew up in Los Angeles and moved in similar circles in high school. "We've stayed in touch," Deutch tells PEOPLE, but it wasn't until the new rom‑com — now streaming on Netflix — that the pair finally had a chance to work together.
"There's been a handful of things that we were either, I was going to do and you had to drop out, or you were in and I was going to [do something else]," Robinson says. "So it's been many years [of] wanting to work together, so it's been just an absolute joy to have the opportunity to do it, and I'm really grateful."

So how did they build that steamy bond? Yoga.
"It was from the jump Zoey was just really welcoming and warm and invited me to go to yoga class, and we took some yoga classes, and it was just really easy," Robinson says.
He adds the two lived "kitty-corner" from each other — which Deutch jokes she had to look up the meaning of after he first said it to her (we did too: it means diagonal) — in Vancouver while they were shooting, so Deutch could easily pop in and the two could take classes together.
"Shoutout Modo Yoga," Deutch adds, before Robinson echoes her.

Apart from the studio, which Deutch says was the "nicest she's ever been to," having a built-in comfort with each other also helped amp their chemistry.
"Because we've known each other a long time and we've seen each other through different periods of our lives, and there is that history and time, it definitely lends toward in favor of there being chemistry and a built-in relationship, so I think it's hard to create that," Deutch says.

Voicemails for Isabelle, which released on June 19, stars Deutch as Jill, an aspiring baker who is grieving the loss of her younger sister, Isabella (Ciara Bravo). She begins to leave voicemails to her old number, believing it was discontinued, but Wes, a real estate agent in Jill's hometown in Texas, receives them, having been assigned the number for his work phone.
A sweet love story unfolds, but at its core, the movie is about love after loss — and the importance of sisterhood.
"I totally fell in love with the element of the sister love story. My sister is my favorite person in the world, my best friend, and it really moved me," Deutch tells PEOPLE of her sister Madelyn Deutch. "I thought it was funny and romantic, but very deep and heart-wrenching."
